What Is a Reasonable Amount to Pay for a Wedding Photographer?
A reasonable amount is the price that buys coverage for your real timeline, a written contract, backup gear, and a photographer whose full galleries look like their highlights—not the cheapest number on a spreadsheet.
In much of the country, full-day wedding photography often lands in the mid thousands. In Los Angeles, experienced full-day work commonly sits between $3,500 and $7,000. Short courthouse hours cost less. Luxury multi-day productions cost more.
Reasonable is about the offer, not a magic number
Two $4,000 quotes can be different jobs. One might be eight hours with backups and a finished gallery in days. Another might be four hours, one camera, and files in four months.
Before you decide a price is “too high” or “a steal,” write down:
Hours on site
Who is actually shooting
Whether a second photographer is included
How images are edited and delivered
When the gallery arrives
What happens if the photographer is ill
If those answers are clear, you can judge the number. If they are not, the number is not reasonable yet—it is incomplete.
What “reasonable” looks like by type of day
Courthouse or micro wedding. You need ceremony, family groups, and a few couple portraits. Paying a full-day luxury rate for three hours is not reasonable. Paying so little that there is no contract or backup camera is not reasonable either.
Half day. Getting ready through first dances, or ceremony through early reception, usually needs about six hours. Expect mid-range pricing in LA, not elopement pricing.
Full traditional Saturday. Getting ready in two rooms, ceremony, formals, cocktail hour, reception—this is where most of the $3,500–$7,000 band lives.
