4 Amazing Locations to Consider For Your Engagement Photography Session and the Costs to Shoot There

Huntington Library, LA Arboretum & Pasadena Museum of History – Engagement & Portrait Photography Fees for 2026

If you’re planning a professional photoshoot or wedding at one of Southern California’s most beautiful garden and historic venues, it’s important to understand the photography permit fees, event costs, and venue rules before booking. This guide compares four popular locations — The Huntington Library, Descanso Gardens, the LA Arboretum, and the Pasadena Museum of History so you can choose the right spot for your session or celebration and know the photography permit fees associated with each location.

Why You Need to Know Photography & Event Costs Before You Book

Venue photography fees aren’t just a formality — they directly impact your budget, your shooting schedule, and what equipment you can bring. Some gardens and museums require reservations, limit guest counts, or restrict props and outfit changes. By knowing the rules and costs ahead of time, you can avoid surprises and ensure your session runs smoothly.

Engagement Photography Permit Pricing & Rules

If you’re dreaming of stunning engagement photos or family portraits at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, you’re not alone. The lush gardens, iconic rose garden, lily ponds, and historic architecture create some of the most beautiful backdrops in Southern California.

As a Los Angeles wedding photographer with over 23 years of experience capturing natural, candid moments, I get asked about shooting here all the time. While it’s an incredible location, professional photography requires a paid permit — and the fees can add up quickly. Luckily I am a preferred photographer for the location so I can usually get couples in for bookings about 2 weeks earlier than the normal one month scheduling.

Here’s the most current information (as of early 2026). Always verify directly with The Huntington, as policies can change.

Current Huntington Library Photography Permit Fees (2026)

  • Base fee for portrait/engagement sessions (up to 5 people including the photographer): $1,200 for a 3-hour session (still photos only).

  • Additional people or longer sessions may incur higher fees.

  • Golf cart (highly recommended for covering the large grounds): +$250.

  • Videographer (one person, one camera): +$250.

  • Restrictions: No tripods, no extra lighting or flash in certain areas. Sessions must be booked at least 30 days in advance and no more than 6 months out.

  • Wedding ceremonies start around $40,000–$50,000+ depending on the tier; full ceremony + reception packages begin at $150,000.

Important Note: All professional/posed photography requires a permit through their Filming & Photography department. Casual personal snapshots with your phone are generally allowed during public hours, but anything planned with a professional photographer needs approval.

Why the Fees Are So High (And Whether It’s Worth It)

The Huntington is a world-class destination with meticulously maintained gardens and rare plant collections. The high permit cost helps preserve these spaces while managing the number of professional shoots. For many couples, the investment creates timeless, magazine-worthy images — especially during golden hour when the light filters beautifully through the trees.

That said, I completely understand if the $1,200+ price tag feels steep for an engagement session. The good news? Southern California has many other stunning, more affordable locations that deliver equally beautiful, natural results with my candid photojournalistic style.

Restrictions and Tips for Photographers

  • Tripods and lighting stands may be limited in certain areas.

  • Large groups may require additional coordination with staff.

  • The gardens are at their most photogenic in spring, but also busiest — consider weekday sessions for fewer crowds.

  • There is absolutely no proposal photography allowed.

Here are two excellent options nearby that offer similar garden elegance without the high permit costs:

1. Los Angeles Arboretum (Arcadia)

  • Much more affordable: Recent permit fees are around $75–$150 for 2–3 hours (up to 14 guests, subject to change).

  • Beautiful tropical plants, peacocks roaming freely, open lawns, and historic buildings.

  • Perfect for relaxed, candid walks and genuine interactions.

  • We’ve captured many joyful engagement sessions and weddings here — see examples in our

3. Pasadena Museum of History

  • Includes access to both indoor and outdoor spaces (great for variety in one location).

  • Sessions must be scheduled in advance. Text 626-720-3544 or email tmacdonaugh@pasadenahistory.org to book your permit.

This makes it one of the most budget-friendly historic venues in Pasadena while still offering elegant, timeless backdrops. It’s ideal for couples wanting a classic yet relaxed feel without breaking the bank.

We’ve photographed sessions here that blend architectural details with natural, unposed moments — exactly the stress-free style we specialize in at LA Digital Photo.

Which Location Is Right for You?

  • Love luxury and vast gardens? → The Huntington (if budget allows).

  • Want maximum value and tropical vibes? → Los Angeles Arboretum.

  • Prefer vintage elegance with indoor/outdoor options at a reasonable price? → Pasadena Museum of History.

All three work wonderfully with our natural, candid approach. I guide lightly so you can focus on enjoying each other — the best photos happen when you’re laughing and being yourselves.

Pro Tips for Beautiful Garden Engagement Sessions

  • Schedule during golden hour (1–2 hours before sunset) for soft, flattering true-to-color light.

  • Wear comfortable shoes — you’ll be walking on paths and grass.

  • Bring a few meaningful details (favorite book, your dog, or a picnic blanket) if you want subtle storytelling elements.

  • Let go of “perfect poses” — the best photos happen when you’re laughing and connecting naturally. I guide lightly while staying in the background.

  • Consider combining your engagement session with one of these venues as a relaxed preview of your wedding day vibe.

"The shoot with Tom was amazing. He suggested the location and had a connection with the caretaker to facilitate everything from start to finish. The shoot itself was a fun time. The quality of the photos and the editing etc was outstanding as well. Would highly recommend and will likely use him again in the future."
